We enjoyed having Danielle and Steve with us for a week over the Christmas Break. Danielle is expecting in June and this will be our first grandchild. She is starting to feel better and hasn't been too sick. We played games from sun up to sun down. Monopoly, four square, croquet, mini golf, Blurt, Mafia, Phsyciatrist, Sequence, Scum, Mormon Bridge, etc. We even took a fun hike up at Red Cliffs. We missed Lindsey, but were so happy to talk to her on Christmas day. She is doing great and was enjoying the snow as well.

Snow in Logan
We spent four days in Logan and the boys had a chance to build a snowman and we all went Cross Country Skiing up Smithfield canyon with my brother Scott as our guide. It was a great time. Logan received 9 inches of fresh snow on Chirstmas day so there was plenty of fresh powder. It was even fun to shovel the walks since we only get to do it once a year!
Christmas Eve Twice!
Andrew and Dawson make cool wise men!
We had Danielle and Steve visiting from Portland, OR and they had to head to Orem to be with Steve's family on Christmas Eve so we celebrated twice. Actually we opened presents four different time. Christmas Adam with Danielle and Steve, they had to get their new pajamas, then Christmas Eve morning we gave them the rest of their presents. Then in Logan we had Christmas Eve with the Datwylers and opened a few gifts then Santa found us with a few more gifts on Christmas morning! We had a simple Christmas but it lasted a long time! Nothing beats good family, good food and good times!

Christmas Eve at the Soup Kitchen
Last year we were lucky enough to arrange to serve Christmas Eve lunch at the soup kitchen at the St. George Catholic church. We had such a great time that we did it again and hope to be able to make it an annual tradition. We enlisted the help of our ward in buying hams and making potato casseroles and salads. The rolls and desserts come from day old grocery store surplus through the Dixie Care and Share. We arranged to have oranges, candy canes, books, scarfs, and toys donated. We even had Santa and Mrs. Claus there to distribute toys. We all had a fun time and it helped us enjoy the true meaning of Christmas.
Snow Day!
School was cancelled on December 18 because we got so much snow in St. George! We had the neighbor kids in the yard making snowmen, snow forts, and having a big snowball fight. That was to be my last day of school so I got out a day early but the boys had to to back for one more day on Friday. We actually still have some snow on the ground where this fort was and it has been two weeks! That is unheard of; it usually melts the next day when we get snow.

Thanksgiving in Logan
We had 32 at our dinner table in Logan at Grandma and Grandpa Datwylers. We were missing Danielle and Steve and Sister Lindsey and a few other cousings who live out of town. The food was divine and of course we got to play some games and do some shopping the next day. We were able to have two Elders join us and one happened to be from Vancouver, BC where Lindsey is serving her mission. They especially enjoyed the Turkey Bowl football game after the dinner. I enjoyed a morning at the gym with my sisters and Heather and Jen (neices) on Saturday morning. We got in some pilates and spin and tried to work of those pies! Fun times!!

Weekend with Grandma and Grandpa
Mom and Dad came down for the weekend and we had a good time enjoying beautiful fall weather in St. George. We drove the loop up through Gunlock, Veyo and back to St. George. We watched the Jazz game on the big screen at Aaron's clubhouse. On Saturday we hiked up Water Canyon in Colorado City and got an ice cream at the dairy. The boys went on an amazing bike ride near Hurricane and Virgin. They did fine until Dawson hit a rock, got a flat, and went flying into a sage brush. He had to push the bike the last 3 miles but he said the scenery was amaznng. We'll go back to this one! We toured a pioneer museum in Hurricane while we waited to pick them up. That evening we went to Tuachan and watched a nice performance by the BYU Young Ambassadors. We enjoyed a relaxing Sunday and devourered mom's famous apple and banana cream pies. They headed home Monday morning and we headed back to work and school. Tell next weekend...

Special Friends
We are grateful to have special friends in our lives. They enrich us, uplift us and help us keep life in perspective. This weekend we were able to enjoy our friend Brandy on Halloween night. She helped us carve pumpkins and hand our Halloween candy. I was grateful to have her watch a 'chick flick' with me and do things like go out to dinner with me when all the boys went to the Conference Priesthood session.
We also got to celebrate Sam's 20th birthday at the park with many friends and family. He always has a hug and kiss for us and makes us feel like we are the most special people in the world. What a wonderful spirit full of unconditional love.
I had the chance to volunteer and help teach a special dance class with Sam's mom a few years ago. I had the opportunity to make many new friends. I am also blessed to get to visit teach a special needs sister! She amazes me with her knowledge and insights. We are grateful at this Thanksgiving season for special people in our lives.

Fall Park City Trip
We traveled up North to watch the State Cross Country Meet at Highland High School. Danielle flew in from Portland to spend the week with us. She had missed Cafe Rio since moving, so that is one of the first places that we stopped in Salt Lake. We also ate there in Provo and Park City!
We stopped by Gardner Village in South SLC and walked through the shops and saw all the witches and pumpkins on display.
We had dinner with Danielle's in laws, the Jackson's in Orem. Danielle met her new little neice, Taylor. We shopped in Park City where we love to visit the art galleries. We also hiked the trail to the famous white barn and saw all the scarecrows on display. Dawson scraped his leg climbing up inside the silo at the barn, but luckily we didn't have to go to the emergency room. Every time we stay in Park City we usually end up there!
We had a lunch picnic along the Provo river in Midway/Heber and enjoyed the fall leaves. We watched a few movies and enjoyed the out door hot tubs at the Marriott Mountainside. Dawson took the ACT test at BYU on Saturday morning. The main reason for the visit up North was for the BYU vs UNLV game on Sauturday. It was a beautiful fall day in full sun as we watched the cougars defeat the rebels. Danielle and I were able to attend a baby shower for my sister in law, Lesa, married to Jon, after the game. The boys met up with a cousin, Jason, who had flown out from Tennessee with his Priest quorum to see the game and tour BYU. They also met up with cousins Jonathon and Justin.
The highlight of the trip was the chance to see our prophet, Pres. Monson, who just happened to be making a presentation at the Mo Tab choir broadcast that we attended on Sunday morning. After that we dropped Danielle off at the SLC airport and headed for home. Steve would have liked to have joined us but he had Dental school tests on Monday and so he needed to study. (He ended up getting the second highest scores in his class!)

Orderville Hike on Fall Break
Fall Break Hike in Orderville Canyon
The day started at 6:00 am as we arose, got our packs ready and loaded two vehicles. Dan, Dawson, Andrew and I were joined by my sister Jill from Logan, her husband Ron, their daughter Krista and her husband, Chris. The boys were off for Fall Break (UEA) and Chris was off from USU. Chris and Krista were down here to Zion this summer and loved the hiking and wanted to do some more. Chris said that her wanted an adventure, and that is what we gave him. We left for Zion just after 7:00 am and didn’t get home until 11:00 pm that night!
We had reserved the hike permit on line but had to stop at Zion, pick up the permit, and pay $20. We got there just after 8:00 and the line was very long. After over an hour we were finally headed out with our permit in hand. The ranger said that we should expect some water and that wearing a wet suit was recommended. Yeah, who is going to carry a wet suit on an 11 mile hike?
We left one vehicle at the bottom in Zion just outside the park and all piled in our Excursion and drove an hour up through the tunnel, past Clear Creek Ranch and to the Orderville Canyon trailhead. There is a rough dirt road you can take to cut 2 ½ miles off the hike, but we opted to start hiking from the top.
When we got to the start of the canyon we saw that even though it was 11:00 am, there was still ice around the edges of the stream. That immediately warned us that the water was going to be cold. We hiked through beautiful canyon walls highlighted with the wonderful colors of the changing fall leaves. It was 2:00 pm and we had stayed dry but were glad that we had our sweatshirts because the canyon was always in the shade and we needed them to stay warm.
Then the canyon narrowed, we heard the trickle of the stream grow louder and we came to a water obstacle that required us to roll up our shorts and hike through the frigid water. That wasn’t bad, we thought. Before long we were holding up our shirts to our chest line and forging across the water. Then we came to the first repel. We were thankful that Dan had come equipped with rope, harness and webbing. One by one we hooked up and were lowered into the water below. We had to throw our packs in an assembly line to get them across the water obstacles. Needless to say, each repel became more difficult and we landed in deeper water. Finally, the only way across was to get lowered in and swim. If you have hiked the subway—you know the feeling of swimming in ice. It takes your breath away, and even though this is your big chance to relieve your self, your bottom is so frozen you can not activate your relief system.
Being an experienced ice water swimmer, I just screamed and swam as fast as I could to the other side. When my sister Jill, in her early 50’s, got to the other side, I asked her if she was ok. And she said, “NO”. Then I remembered my first time when I was with my children and we were all crying. I realized that we had to keep moving as it was nearing 5:00 pm and the sun goes down at 6:50. Jill led the way in our fight or flight mode. We didn’t hesitate as we came to more cold pools. We jumped right in and did what we had to do. (Notice our pictures end before the big technical repels and swims. We didn’t have time to preserve the memory, or their may have not been anyone alive in which to need to remember.
We finally made it to where Orderville Canyon meets up with the Virgin River in the Narrows hike. We screamed with delight later finding out that our husbands and family had thought that we had come to another “technical” spot. We determined that we had another two miles of hiking in mostly knee high water to get to Zion Park and the river walk trailhead. With our feet frozen we tread on reaching the people who were out for a leisurely stroll on the boardwalk “experiencing” Zion Canyon. We smiled as we passed, laughing to ourselves, having just “truly experienced the marvel, the beauty, the technicality and joy of conquering Zion.”
We left the kids at the pizza place, in their wet clothes, where they ordered pizza while we made the trip up to get the vehicle at the top of the mountain. The heater in the truck was very appreciated. Reaching home at 11:00 pm, there was nothing like a hot shower and a warm bed after a very cold and long hike.
We never saw the sun after getting wet, unlike hiking in the Subway, where you get a chance to warm up after the swims. This hike was in our opinion more technical and just as pretty if not more so than the Subway. Will we do it again, yes, but not unless it is 110 degrees outside! Next time, won’t you join us?

Camping on Cedar Mountain
We left St. George at 6:00 pm and drove up to Cedar Mountain and unloaded the 4-wheelers. We loaded up all our gear on 'the mule' and headed up the trail that we went on our stake trek last summer. It was so much nicer to be riding rather than walking this time! We set up our tent at dusk, roasted some some-mores and watched the movie "Nim's Island" on our lap top. Dan cooked us a wonderful Pan cake breakfast in the morning and then we rode a few more miles up to the little mountain lake that we discovered last summer. The boys stripped down to their boxers and swam in the cold mountain lake water while I read on a blanket and Dan rested. We were back to St. George by 4:00 pm so we could watch the BYU game. Nice get away!

August News
August 2008
Well, summer has come to an end. It was a busy one but full of fun. It was great to see most of you this year at the reunion and another huge thank you to Julie, Murry and family. We really had a fabulous time. We were so glad that Ma and Pa could join us for most of the activities.
We just got off the phone with Elder Ryan, telling him goodbye and sending our best wishes. We wish that we would have been able to say goodbye in person but we had just come through Provo on Monday night after the kids got done with a fun day at Lagoon and Dan and I celebrated our 26th anniversary by having lunch at the Garden Room at the top of the Joseph Smith building. We wanted a view of the SLC temple but instead we got a view of the big hole where they are constructing the new downtown city project. Oh well, it was fun to watch the cranes!
We spent a few days at Tony Grove Lake with my family at our reunion. We camped and hiked 10 miles to the top of Mt. Naomi and back. There were beautiful wild flowers and we even slid down a few glaciers. You can check out our pictures on our blog or Danielle and Steve’s. Dan and the boys had their first fishing licenses and caught a few fish. We spent a day on the beach at Bear Lake and just missed Art and Apryl, Jim and Martha and Jon and Lesa there. We all were there within a week of each other but just missed each other. Maybe we should have our reunion there next year Jon?? Just an idea.
The boys are going to Youth conference for a day at Beaver High Adventure ropes course tomorrow. They start school on the 12. Dawson tried out for the golf team today and was also called to be the seminary council president for his new school. That will keep him busy. He is looking for good seminary ideas so send them his way. Andrew has been running with cross country and may stick with that. He has enjoyed swimming with his friends at their pools or at the river. But nothing is as fun as yellow creek!
Danielle and Steve are leaving this week to move to Portland. They will stay with Alisha and Scott until they can move into their apartment. Thanks to them. We miss them already. We were glad that they could spend most of the summer with us. Lindsey is doing awesome on her mission but of course we miss her. We really hope that Darrell and Jordan or Morgan or Mandy or anyone else will move out here and hang with us and go to school or something. No, I won’t make you date but I will feed you!
Dan and the kids also went canyoneering in Zion’s Park and had to do some long repels.
In fact, the next week a Park Volunteer was repelling there and fell 100 feet. She is still alive. I’m glad that they were more careful. They also repelled in a huge cave up by Tony Grove Lake in the cold and dark. Dawson got to hike Havasupai again with his friend’s young men’s group. It was a lot hotter this time of year and he got quite a few blisters.
I went back to school today to start to prepare for the students to come next week. Where did the summer go? We send our love and best wishes to all and especially to Elder Ryan Flake. He will rock Salt Lake City! “For behold, a marvelous work is about to come forth…”
Love to all and keep the faith,
Shelly, Dan and family

Pine Creek Canyoneering
We went rapelling and hiking in Pine Creek slot canyon. You start at the Zion's Tunnel and rapel down about four times and then hike out. Each time you come to freezing cold ponds that you land in and swim out. It is very cold. The water in some of them was pretty stinky as well. We went with several of Dawson's friends and Aaron our cousin. It was a good and strenuous day.
