Easter Weekend!

We had a fun Easter Weekend with all of the kids at home. Saturday we rode 4-wheelers at Sand Hollow Red Hill and had a picnic on the top of the bluff. That night we had our first cook out of the season with our friend Brandy and also colored Easter eggs. We had an early morning Easter basket hunt because our church starts at 8:30 am. Next it was a traditional ham dinner and of course strawberries and cream angel food cake. We tried out all of the games that the Easter bunny brought like frisbie golf and ring toss and enjoyed the kids for as long as we could before they had to head back up north to return to college.

We hope to see them again soon as Lindsey is expecting her mission call this week!!!!!

Grand Canyon Hike

We thought we’d share a few pictures from our Grand Canyon hike to Vasey’s Paradise. Dan and the boys had talked about backpacking in, and since I couldn't talk them into our usual spring break trip to Southern CA, I decided to join them. When we pulled up to the trail head, they acknowledged that they didn’t think that I would really come, and that this was a pretty strenuous hike. As we started down the trail we were on a rocky cliff and had to hand down back packs immediately because the cliff trail was so narrow. Dan almost made us turn around within the first 20 yards. We had just driven 3 hours to get there, so we talked him into continuing on. It is a 2,500 foot decent and we did it in 4 ½ hours. Every step is on a rock and has to be steadied and sured. We descended two large steep rock washes, you can see one in the picture that I am pointing up at. Crazy! My legs were like rubber the last hour but we finally got down to the Colorado River. Dawson jumped in the freezing river a few times, that comes out of the bottom of Lake Powell. He was out pretty quickly!

We left our packs on the beach and hiked over to Vasey’s falls that come out of the rock canyon wall. We replenished our water supply there. When we got back to our camp we found that some ring tail cats had clawed through Dan’s pack and sampled our jerky and a sealed bag of chicken(dinner). The night was fairly warm and pleasant despite our sore muscle sand thin mats. After our oatmeal breakfast, we got on the trail early so it wouldn’t take me two days to get out. Luckily, it was all uphill on Friday,so I was using a new set of muscles. A lot of the trail is done using both hands and feet to get up the rocks and an occasionally hand up by the boy sand a boost from below from Dan helped a lot. There was a nice cool breeze that helped but it turned into a whipping wind at the top as we tried to negotiate the cliffs again. Needless to say, we made it up and out in four hours. We can’t walk today but it was a great adventure!!

March 2008

Spring has sprung! We are on spring break for a week and are actually staying home for the break. I am way behind on cleaning and spent a wonderful day today going through files, putting away scrapbook stuff that has been waiting for me to get around to it, and throwing stuff away! More tomorrow….
Actually, we did make a quick trip up to Logan on Saturday to celebrate my mom and dad’s birthdays. My Dad is now 80 years young and my mom right behind him. They still work at the temple two days a week and my mom was just called as a counselor in the Stake RS Presidency so they continue to stay young in service. What great examples we have been blessed to have in our lives. Dad and Mom Flake have worn themselves out in service. What an awesome example they have been to us and our family.
Dan is busy with mailboxes again now that the ground has thawed out. He is waiting for the mountain areas to melt and get warmer so he can move on to his other jobs. He has a reservoir ramp to do as soon as it gets warm enough to pour concrete there.
I am enjoying a week off from school and now it means that there is only one quarter left of school. The boys are happy about this as well. We had to take them out for a steak earlier this week because Dawson earned an A- in Pre-Cal and Andrew got 100% on his history test and so they both had all A’s!
Dawson enjoyed a great season of church ball. Andrew is submitting his idea for his Eagle project; Lindsey is dancing, dancing, dancing and filling out mission papers! Danielle and Steve are anxious to prepare for their move to Portland next August. We are flying up there with them on April 24 to look at the housing prospects for them while Steve is in dental school for four years. Danielle has been in touch with Alisha and Scott and we have talked to Hal and hope to meet his new wife while we are up there.
Congratulations Hal on your upcoming marriage. We are so happy for you and wish you much love and happiness. Anyone else getting married this summer? Any babies being announced? Congratulations Nancy on finishing up your RN schooling! You go girl!
We are planning on the reunion over the first week of July. Thanks Julie for your preparation. Please let us know how we can help.
We enjoy getting weekly updates on mom and dad’s health. We sure would love to have them come out for Easter and Conference. Let us know when you feel up to it.
Thanks to all of you who write and keep us updated each month. We love you and pray that you will continue to be blessed and watched over.

Much love and Easter wishes,
Shelly, Dan and family
